battle. you heard senator graham talking about chuck hagel, what appears to be the nominee for defense secretary. congress has two months to fix the debt ceiling before the u.s. may have to default on its bills. so the president comes back from a nice vacation in hawaii, he comes back to big issues that they have to tackle. sequestration, the debt ceiling, spenning. he is enjoying his last few minutes here on the plane, taxiing and he will head back to the white house with his family. >> jamie: molly, thank you. >> can washington come up with a plan to raise the debt limit without burying the count country in more debt? we have a former spokesperson for former governor jeb bush. happy new year. justin, the president says there won't be any negotiating t. needs to be raised -- period. what do you think? >> i think it's remarkable. it's as if the election meant that president obama has been elected king. the republicans compromised on a very important principle. they didn't want to raise taxes. president obama wanted to raise taxes, they compromised. now president obama is issuing a no-c
that meets the aspirations of the syrian people. in the u.s. the former republican senator chuck hagel is expected to be nominated as the defense secretary. he has proven to be a controversial choice. >> he spent the last three years advising president obama on key defense issues. he is very outspoken. on the iraq war he once called the strategy a game of pingpong. on the issue of nuclear issues he said, how is it you can have -- you cannot have them but we can? chuck hegel calls for talks with hamas, and that raised a red flag among many republicans worried about how he could be in charge of the one-on-one military relationship between the u.s. and israel, having made comments like that. president obama arrived from hawaii. he is also the before a fight. the u.s.-u.n. ambassador susan rice, republicans would have none of her because of the way she handled the been gauzy situation. president obama is saying, i am putting up chuck paypal. he is not withdrawing his name, so republicans if you wish to vote against him, that is up to you. mitch mcconnell says when chuck hagel comes up for
at the fence and look at senator hagel and others, there's a lot of issues surrounding that. the science area is where we have to stay focused. whoever the president would like to serve in his discretion, obviously, that's his call. i don't want to judge where he's going on what motivated him to make that decision, but, clearly, anyone who fills the roles, we would seek to have a good relationship to base policy development in sound science and to pursue the mutual interests that we can find, the commonground we can find in the policy development. as i mentioned to one of the earlier questions today, we had a good dialogue over the past couple months, and we have areas that we disagree on. we represent a broader industry that sometimes sees the world differently than perhaps a regulator might. we support robust regulation, but we believe regulation should be thoughtful, and it should be based in science, and that's what drives our conversation in dealing with the regulators. we welcome the opportunity to work with whoever the president may nominate, whoever the president can get confirmed in
him questions about his views on issues. the secretary of defense -- senator hagel, when he is confirmed, as we hope he will be -- carries out the president's policies. and i think the president's policies on lgbt issues are both commendable, supported by the lgbt community, and will continue to be the policies of this administration as long as president obama is in office. so, again, i think you've seen what senator hagel said about this, and the president is very confident that senator hagel will be confirmed and that he will be an excellent secretary of defense and will implement all of the president's policies with regards to the defense department. let me move around here. chuck. >> following up on debt ceiling, i know your position hasn't changed on the 14th amendment. do you guys have a position on this trillion-dollar coin business? >> i would simply go back to what i said. the option here is for congress to do its job and pay its bills -- bills that have already been racked up. we saw what happened last summer, the summer of 2011, when congress flirted with the idea
. does that mean you're going to be upset with your likely new boss, chuck hagel, who argues for a smaller budget? thank you. [laughter] >> well, first off, i'm not sure what the president would announce today, and if i did know, i wouldn't scoop him on that. i'm smart enough not to do that.
